On Changing…

At work I’ve been involved in a statewide project to bring evidenced based practices to the criminal justice system and the other systems that work with it (i.e. mental health).   More specifically, I’m receiving intensive training in Motivational Interviewing.  I won’t go into the nuts and bolts of the technique itself, but a piece of MI is the Stages of Change.   The basic concept is that people go through 6 distinct stages when making a change.  It doesn’t matter if the change is large or small, these stages are generally present during the change process.  These stages aren’t always linear … Keep on reading —->

The Fear

I’ve been in my hometown for the last 10 days for one of my best friends’ wedding.  Unfortunately my parents’ computer is slow as molasses, so I wasn’t able to post anything.  I’m still digesting the trip and will be getting my life back in order now that I’m back in Denver.  In the mean time, please enjoy this Lily Allen video, “The Fear” )

Big DIY Dreams

I LOVE the website Design Sponge.  All the Do-It-Yourself (DIY) projects on this site have me inspired.  I don’t know that I’m actually going to do any of them, but I have big ambitions dreams of doing some of the projects. Check out all these interesting and creative shelves! Go down to the  middle of the page and there’s a shelf made from a magazine holder.  So simple yet so amazing! I don’t have a lot of shelving on my apartment walls.  The main reason is because I don’t own any shelves and buying them new tends to be a … Keep on reading —->

No Smoking = Massage

I decided to take some of the money I used to spend on cigarettes and put it toward a massage every month.  I struck up a deal with a woman The Mister used to work with. Tonight is my first one.  I’m super excited.  The other part of the money I’m saving will go toward my loan.  I’ve always wanted to be a regular massage kind of person, but never had a good excuse to spend the money. Plus – what better way to reward myself for not smoking? ) Need a massage therapist?  Check out Melissa.  I quite enjoy … Keep on reading —->

Greetings From Afar

I made a card today.  It’s been a while since I’ve made one… Front of the blank card I’m going to be sending this to a far away friend with whom I’ve been out of touch. In this age of technology and social media I’ve found that I have a false sense of connection to others.  Phone calls are less, letters are basically nonexistent and I don’t feel I see people in real life as much as I should.  This is something I want to change.  I’m starting now – with this letter.   Hopefully I can re-connect to those I’ve … Keep on reading —->

Easter aka Quit Day

I decided to quit smoking today.  I’ve been moving in that direction for quite some time but I finally made the commitment. My last cigarette was about 22 hours ago. I realized today that Easter seems like a pretty fitting day to quit smoking.  Easter represents renewal, new beginnings and a fresh start (kinda).  Spring in generally is about renewal and something beautiful coming from the gloom of the past season. So yeah, that’s pretty fitting, right? I’m on edge right now.  This really does suck.  And I now fully understand the concept and rationale behind “one day at a … Keep on reading —->

Minty Fresh Financing

Mint.com makes me happy.  It really does… In case you’re not familiar, it’s a financial website that can be used to help you budget and eventually save money.  The site has all sorts of nifty little features and gadgets. You can read a review here.  It’s a pretty comprehensive review. I tried mint.com a few years back and didn’t think it was worth my time.  Back then I wasn’t really watching my budget too closely and the way I handled my finances was different.  Back then I used the envelope method of budgeting – I would make a large withdrawal … Keep on reading —->

Sharpie To The Rescue!

I have a certain pair of boots that I love.  I really do love these boots.  I can’t really explain why, except that I feel good wearing them. I’ve been wearing them this week because I know spring is rolling in and it’ll be too warm to wear them before I know it.  I’ve gotta get all the boot wearin’ in now. As I sat at a meeting yesterday I noticed a couple of dings in the toe of one of them.  Not cool.  These tears are unacceptable. I decided to do what any good, frugal person would do and … Keep on reading —->
