I’ve Gone Bananas

It’s inevitable that every couple of weeks or so, one of my bananas gets super ripe before I can eat it.  I hate the thought of wasting it by throwing it away, so I’ve been freezing them.  My thought was that once I gathered up enough bananas, I would try my hand at banana bread. Remember… Last night I took all those blackened bananas out of the freezer, got myself a recipe and called a friend.  I had to call the one person I know who I can call The Queen of Banana Bread.  I’m not a baker, nor do … Keep on reading —->

I’ll Take the Free Sandwich, Please.

The Mister and I ran to Old Navy today.  I thought I’d stop in to see if I could get a good deal on some clothing replacements that no longer fit me.  As I approached the store, I noticed a little tent set up.  The closer I got, I noticed it was Jimmy John’s subs.  Yum.  There was a guy there giving out free sample sandwiches and there was also a pile of coupons for free subs.  Sweet. Oddly, the man said that most people didn’t notice the little cards.  How couldn’t you notice them??   My eye immediately caught … Keep on reading —->

How Much Do You Spend on Bottled Water?

One thing I’ve changed throughout the years is how much bottled water I drink.  I can’t say I never buy a bottle of water, but I don’t do it very often.  I have many different hard plastic water bottles that I fill up to use while I’m out and about.  When I last flew, I took an empty water bottle with me and filled it up after security, so that I didn’t have to buy any water when I got thirsty. Part of the reason I don’t buy bottled water is because of the impact on the environment and the … Keep on reading —->

One for Two Dinners

Over the last year, The Mister and I have mastered eating out cheaply.  Not only do we use coupons (see Noshing On The Cheap), but we have also discovered that we don’t always need our own entrees.   3 or 4 years ago, we would have each packed away our own entrees and some appetizers, but we’ve discovered that the smaller we get, the less food we really need.  Instead of ordering 2 dinners, when we don’t have a coupon we’ll order 1 entree and 2 plates.  There are a couple of places that we do this regularly (especially one of … Keep on reading —->

The Price of Convenience

As I walked through the grocery store the other day, I noticed some sliced cantaloupe wedges in the fruit section.  Just out of curiousity, I thought I would check out the price of said cantaloupe wedges… $6.99! Really?!  $6.99 for 2 stinkin’ slices of cantaloupe?!  Wowza!  And I’m talking literally 1/4 of a cantaloupe! Lets do the math here kids.  Right now cantaloupe @ Sun Flower Market is $.77.  TOTAL.  Not per pound, $.77 for a WHOLE cantaloupe.  That means I could get 9 cantaloupes for the price of 2 already sliced wedges. I can’t imagine a scenario in which … Keep on reading —->

Quesadilla Casserole

Last weekend, while on a trip to Big Lots, The Mister and I came across a packet of spices specifically made for a Quesadilla Casserole.  The beautiful part, was it was only $.50!  After discussing our ability to make this casserole, we decided to buy the packet. A few weeks ago I found a 1lb package of taco seasoned ground turkey on mark down at King Soopers ($2.50).  The Mister has 2 full packets of tortillas that his work was getting rid of (free!).  Got the spice packet ($.50). Then we needed 2 cans of tomato sauce ($.50 each = … Keep on reading —->

Got Lemonade?

Photo Credits Today was HOT in Denver.  We’re talking 100 degrees, depending on who you ask.  As I was driving home from a doctor’s appointment I noticed a little girl sitting alone at a table in her driveway with a pitcher. I believe she was selling Lemonade.  I can’t really be sure, but she didn’t have a clear sign, which I must point out, is rule #1 of a lemonade stand.  Clear, concise advertising.   That’s beside the point… This brought back a lot of fond memories for me.  I remember sitting outside my house for hours as a child … Keep on reading —->

Pot Luckin’

Shortly after I started this spending fast, I made a proposition to a couple of my friends. Lets start having potlucks!   What better way to enjoy the company of others?  We each take turns hosting; The host is responsible for the main dish and the rest of us bring something else.   Usually someone brings something to drink (of the alcoholic variety), someone brings dessert, and the other person brings something else complimentary to the main dish. Originally we talked about doing this once per month, but the summer months have been tricky.  We’ve had 3 so far and I’ve enjoyed … Keep on reading —->

Do You Come Here Often?

When I first started this spending fast, I discovered the bread thrift store.   I have passed it on my way home for years now and never really thought much of it.  Once in a while I would look at it as I passed and think “a bread thrift store?  That’s weird…”  When I think of ‘thrift stores’ I think of Good Will, Salvation Army and ARC – you know, other people’s junk that turn into my treasures.  So putting the word bread in front of ‘thrift store’ didn’t seem to make any sense.  One day I decided to go in … Keep on reading —->

Drinking On The Cheap

As I mentioned in Confessions of a Frugal Social Worker, I’ve had some slip ups when it comes to drinking lately.  There have been one or two other instances this summer that I was out with friends and indulged in a drink or two at a bar.  Except for the example in the last blog post, I hadn’t spent more than $6-$7 for a couple of drinks and this has happened no more than 3 times over a few months. When I came into this spending fast, one of my friends at work questioned my plan and one her first … Keep on reading —->
